2009-ES-55 S.A. de Xestión do Plan Xacobeo
Location Santiago de Compostela (Spain) Theme 1 European awareness Theme 2 Art and culture
Project environment:
Volunteers will participate in the activities to celebrate the Holy Year 2010 for the pilgrims and the citizens, in general, throughout the Jacob's Way.
We think that the cultural background and perspectives of European youth are very interesting for the thousands of people from different countries and cultures who will participate in this cultural experience in the French way of the Jacob's Way. Their cultural knowledge could enrich all activities carried out throughout the year by providing an intercultural dimension. At the same time, volunteers can learn a lot of things.
During the first month, volunteers will carry out activities related with their language and specific training. They will be hosted in Santiago (administrative and cultural centre and end of the Way).
From May to September, they will be distributed in the French Way, in the hostels where they will carry out their activities. In October they will all meet in Santiago to evaluate the activities, elaborate diffusion material and prepare volunteers to carry out diffusion tasks in their countries.
Volunteers will be hosted in the towns with the pilgrim hostels (in single rooms or double rooms shared with another volunteer).
They will receive money (monthly) for their food and pocket money (105 €/month).
Proposed activities for EVS volunteers
We want to offer volunteers an intercultural experience and to promote the YiA programme and the Jacob's Way through their integration in the activities offered to pilgrims and citizenship, in general, as celebration of the Holy Year 2010. The activity is organised in a way that non-formal learning of volunteers is guaranteed, as there is previous training regarding the cultural richness of the Jacob's Way, the YiA programme and the diffusion of their own culture. To manage so, they will participate in the different activities under the supervision of the technical team and we will carry out monitoring in the form of regular evaluation meetings where the acquisition of foreseen learning will be assessed.
We want to offer volunteers the chance of: - Working in teams with other youth and professionals. - Learning two foreign languages; Castilian (Spanish) and Galician. - Knowing about the activities and services offered to public during the Holy Year 2010. - Learning how pilgrim hostels work. - Know the YiA programme and the chances it offers to youth. - Learn to plan and carry out intercultural activities. - Learning to plan and carry out diffusion activities regarding the Programme and the Jacob's Way. - Participating actively in the planning of the different activities. - Promoting their own country. - Suggesting and organising new activities. - Learning to be more patient, open and independent. - Knowing a new culture in all its aspects. - Learning the importance of knowing other mentalities and cultures for the personal development.
Specifically, the volunteers will carry out the following tasks: " Collaborate in diffusion campaigns about the YiA Programme: information talks, distribution of brochures,... " Collaborate in activities for the diffusion of the Jacob's Way: direct information to pilgrims in hostels of the French Way, elaboration of information and diffusion materials, support hosting pilgrims, control of use and opinion of services,... " Support the hosts of pilgrim hostels: reception, distribution and information to pilgrims. " Collaborate in promotion and diffusion activities of the Jacob's Way as First European Cultural Itinerary. " Carry out intercultural activities " Development of a personal project according to their preferences, skills and abilities.
The activities are mainly practical (information, accompaniment, diffusion,...) and over 85% of the activity will be done in direct contact with the pilgrims. Volunteers will provide an added value, as they may attend pilgrims of different nationalities in their mother tongue, making communication easier.
First month: training at four levels: Intensive language training YiA and EVS training. Specific training about the Jacob's Way. Specific training about the development of intercultural activities Furthermore, volunteers will walk a part of the Way so they can live the experience from the point of view of the pilgrims. We consider that this experience will be very useful to carry out the voluntary service. Collaboration: 5 days/week and 2 free days/week Participation times: 25-30 hours/week; from 12 to 18 or 13 to 19 hours. Example of a week: Monday to Friday 12.00-14.00: Reception and information to pilgrims. 14.00-15.00 Lunch 15.00-18.00 Activities: intercultural activities, promotion of the YiA programme and the Jacob's Way, information to pilgrims, collection of data,...
Profile of the volunteer(s) and selection process:
Youth interested in cultural activities, the Jacob's Way and the YiA programme and motivated to participate in these matters. Youth with communication skills, social skills, with enthusiasm, creative, with initiatives, values and ideals of solidarity and European identity. We also try to host volunteers from different countries to guarantee the cultural exchange. Training and/or experience in cultural activities are an asset. We also take into account the work done by the sending organisation, as we think this is an essential point, especially regarding the results of the project. Interested candidates shall fulfil a questionnaire (a part for them and another part for the sending organisation). In it, we ask volunteers to explain their interests, motivations, skills, potential,... and the organisations to explain how they carry out their tasks as sending organisation, the support and training they provide volunteers. We understand that all volunteers fulfil the questionnaire counselled by their sending organisation.
Number of volunteers hosted: 50
Prevention of risks, security and protection:
The EVS volunteers will have the same monitoring as our local volunteers, with frequent accompaniment meetings. Furthermore, they will be integrated as soon as possible in our local activity and will have a mentor and a coordinator in all activities who will guarantee their physical and mental welfare.
Motivation and EVS experience Due to the celebration of the Holy Year 2010, Galicia will host a large amount of pilgrims from all over Europe and the rest of the world who will do the well known Jacob's Way. Over 1,000 years of history have proved that "European Awareness" and "Art and Culture" go together along the Jacob's Way.
The declaration of the Jacob's Way as the First European Cultural Itinerary, on 23rd. Oct., 1987, in Santiago de Compostela, sets the revitalisation of one of the European Pilgrim Ways which goes over all distances, borders and lack of understanding, the way to Santiago. It underlines the essential values which this initiative, with the aim of constructing a society based on tolerance, respect, liberty and solidarity, means. On this base, it is easy to justify a European volunteering project which focuses on the way, as it matches the aims and priorities of the YiA programme: active citizenship, promotion of solidarity and tolerance, mutual understanding among youth from different countries, promotion of cultural diversity, etc.
For this reason, we think it is the right moment to supply a group EVS project linked to large scale European or international events which provides youth with knowledge and relation with other cultures through the support given to pilgrims and all the cultural activities related to the Holy Year in Galicia.
Description of the organisation The S.A. de Xestión do Plan Xacobeo (Office for the management of the Holy Year) is a public entity dependent of the Council for Culture and Tourism. Its social aim is the design, planning, coordination and execution of the following activities, related with the Holy Year and the Jacob's Way (Camino de Santiago): conservation, rehabilitation and recovery of the way, symposiums, congresses, sessions and cycles, itinerary exhibitions, management of the hostel network of the Way, promotion of the Holy Year (included in the entertainment activities). We organise public activities, so there is no aim to profit, the organisation cannot pay for all its costs, so it depends on the regular funding by the regional Government to carry out its aims. Many people work in all projects and activities related with its aims. Target group: folk, in general, and people doing the Jacob's Way, in particular.
