EASTERN AFRICA

Country: Kenya
Organisation: Kenya Voluntary Development Association (KVDA)
Project: The project will be divided into three phases: workshops, leadership skills development and work readiness training; capacity building activities on various topical areas with proposals of deterrent measures to arrest controversial practices; community development (project planning and management) with the issue of gender and community financial services management. The volunteers will conduct a research on the female genital mutilation (FGM), girl child education, women empowerment and women leadership. They will analyse how these topics affect the Kenyan society in different rural and urban regions. Within each topic, specific tasks will be planned for the volunteers such as home visits, physical activity bringing together community members, guiding and counselling to victims of FGM, physiotherapy. All the tasks aim to investigate the role of the woman in particular contexts and invite the volunteers to play the role of a catalyst to re-activate the local processes of women empowerment and gender sensitivity.  

Country: Uganda
Organisation: Uganda Pioneers Association (UPA)
Project: The volunteers will be involved in researches on the gender role related issues within two main activities in three different zones corresponding to UPA branches: organisation of gender training with workshops and organisation/management of gender youth clubs at 10 workcamp projects places. Thus through forum theatre activities, games and sports, they will participate actively to the long-term promotion of gender equality in Uganda. Special feature(s): The project will particularly emphasize on the integration of the volunteers in the hosting communities. They will be accommodated by local families and particular attention will be paid to crisis management and conflict resolution's measures.  

WESTERN AFRICA

Country: Ghana
Organisation: ICYE Ghana
Project: The objective of the project is to realize a research on the gender issue in Ghana with a particular focus on the educational matter. The foreseen activities will take place at "Christ Vocational Center". In the first phase the volunteers will be involved with the support of the staff in the vocational trainings and cultural programmes of the centre (batik design, soap making, sewing, pastry making). These trainings are aimed at young people, particularly young women with a low educational level. The volunteers' participation will give them the opportunity to face the local gender realities and to collect information for the research that will be the second phase of the project.  

Country: Nigeria
Organisation: ICYE Nigeria
Project: After two 3-day on-arrival trainings aiming at facilitating a smooth integration of the volunteers through an awareness-raising of the local customs, the volunteers will collect the necessary information for the realisation of a research on gender roles and sensitivity in Nigeria. To do so, they will have the opportunity to work in the different departments and projects of ICYE Nigeria and then choose together with the mentors a particular topic on which their research will focus. Special feature(s): The volunteers will have a job description and will be supervised the first few weeks before he or she can be allowed to start working more independently. A specific evaluation time will be organised during two days at the end of the project to assess the integration of the volunteers in the local project community, the intercultural learning process and also the good practices for the future EVS projects to be implemented. 

Country: Togo
Organisation: ASTOVOT
Project: The volunteers will teach French, English or German in the schools already supported by ASTOVOT and organise recreational activities with the children aiming at enhancing sustainable global development. They will conduct a research on the access to education considering the gender. They will also study the influence of the social and economic contexts (e.g. family, school and group of pairs, religion, living in a rural/urban area) on the construction of the gender role and the different expectations and ambitions related to the gender in the educational, social and working field. The most appropriate tools and methodologies to conduct the research will be firstly identified in a preparation meeting. Special feature(s): The children as well as the local communities will be informed in advance on the presence of the volunteers, on their role and on the importance of this exchange for all the involved parts. The different evaluation sessions will give the volunteers the opportunity to participate to cultural activities such as a Ewé language course but also debates about the Millenium Development Goals.  

Country: Togo
Organisation: Frères Agriculteurs et Artisans pour le Développement (FAGAD)
Project: The volunteers will be in charge of the realisation of a research on the women role in urban and rural areas of Togo and more particularly on gender related issues in educational and professional fields. Particular attention will be given to the micro-credit projects and training on small business management as an instrument for rural women empowerment. The project will also allow the volunteers to improve and put into pratice their communication skills through their contact with the local realities and deep involvement in activities with the community, schools and professionnal sector.  

SOUTHERN AFRICA

Country: Lesotho
Organisation: Lesotho Workcamps Association (LWA)
Project: The overall objective of this EVS project is to deal with gender issues and gender sensitivity impact on youth development programmes in an international voluntary service project located in Lesotho. More specifically, the project will focus on identifying women and men roles within selected communities in Lesotho and assessing/promoting gender equality among young people involved in voluntary actions. This research will allow the volunteers not only to explore the traditional role of Lesothan women and men but also their contemporary role. Special feature(s): The on-arrival training will introduce the volunteers to the general issues related to an EVS programme (missions, expectations) as well as to the cultural specificities of Lesotho in terms of language, history, heritage, practices of Basotho.  

Country: Malawi
Organisation: Active Youth Initiative for Social Enhancement (AYISE)
Project: The volunteers will mainly promote gender equality through a research on the gender roles in the Malawian society in general and in Malawian environmental projects in particular. To do so, they will participate in voluntary service projects related to Natural Resources Management in community centre and schools in order to get information on the issue directly from locals, AYISE staff and authorities. More concretely, the volunteers will be involved in tree nursery raising and planting and awareness-raising workshops. At the end of the project, an evaluation meeting will be organised to present the results of the activities compiled in a Gender and Environment training manual. This meeting will also evaluate the impact of the project in its entirety notably the assistance for the research and the working conditions provided by AYISE. Special feature(s): A preparation training will be organised to identify tools and questions on the research of the volunteers with the help of AYISE staff and to set a work programme for the Natural Resources Management projects. The issues of immigration will be also addressed so as to reduce anxiety of the volunteers in relation to their legality of stay in the country.  

Country: Mozambique
Organisation: Associaçao Juvenil Para o Desenvolvimento do Voluntariado em Moçambique (AJUDE)
Project: The project will focus mainly on a research on gender dynamics and involve the volunteers in a wide range of stimulating missions with different age groups from different social and economic backgrounds and in different environments. In the first phase of the project, they will participate in education and awareness-raising campaigns about HIV/AIDS and the importance of health care. They will also work with disadvantaged children with the objective of their social reintegration and the prevention of risk situation. In the second phase, the volunteers will work in an assigned project and start the research activity whose results will be presented under the form of a report at the end of the project. All these activities aim to provide a large insight into the work of local organisations dealing with gender in Mozambique such as AJUDE. Special feature(s): In order to maximize their intercultural awareness and skills, the volunteers will be hosted by local families in Maputo townships.  

Country: Zambia
Organisation: Youth Association of Zambia
Project: The EVS project will be run in different provinces throughout Zambia and the volunteers will work with several YAZ partners in order to gain knowledge on the issues of gender and traditions in Zambia through a genuine immersion into the Zambian culture. The project is two-fold: researches and hands-on workshops. The volunteers will firstly identify specific themes and fields of action in order to better promote gender sensitivity and bring gender issues to rural and urban communities with forum theatre activities. They will work together with local theatre groups in depicting gender differences between the cultures and the traditional gender roles within Zambian society. Then, the volunteers will participate in awareness-raising workshops which aim to encourage the communities (schools, youth organisations and development committees) to get involved in gender projects and activities in a responsive manner. The volunteers will also have the opportunity to create a newsletter with information about gender issues to increase different stakeholders' awareness. Special feature(s): The Zambian mentors of the EVS volunteers will be chosen among local experienced volunteers. The choice will also take into account the gender, age and area (rural or urban) in which the EVS volunteers will work
